Garabateando@la Plaza Colón

Garabateando@La Catedral de San Juan

Yesterday we met at the Cathedral in Old San Juan. Sketchcrawl 33 was also held yesterday, so we participated in it as well. We also sketched some of the neighboring buildings. I was using a few new tube watercolors I had filled half pans with and put in my travel tin. I am looking to make brighter and more colorful sketches, so I changed my palette a bit. Garabateando @Celestino Art Gallery

Yesterday our sketching group, Garabateando.com, met at Galería Paseos, a shopping center in San Juan. We had been invited by the owner of Celestino Art Gallery, Junior Ortiz, to meet them while some of the exposing artists had a painting session right there in the mall. Today we went sketching to the Ashford Avenue in Condado, a couple blocks from where I sketched yesterday. I did a few sketches, but probably the one I loved the most is the one I gave as a gift. Garabateando@Old San Juan

We had planned to go sketch at the historic Cemetery of San Juan, but it happens that it is closed on Saturdays at noon. We tried to sketch it from the nearby hills, after all it is a wonderful view of the Atlantic Ocean, the San Felipe del Morro fort and part of the cemetery viewed from above. Today we stopped at Starbucks for a quick sketching session. I’m not that crazy about Starbucks, but it is comfortable, I can get some coffee and most patrons are so still that it can be a good practice spot. Last Saturday our sketching group Garabateando.com went to my Alma Mater, the University of Puerto Rico; it is affectionately called iupi, “short” for UPR. Sketching @Abracadabra, Santurce

Well, I had never tasted any of the two “artisanal” beers they had, so I tried them both. I googled one of them, Blue Moon beer and it’s apparently brewed by Coors Brewing Company… However, it is an unfiltered beer with cloudy appearance, spiced with coriander and orange peel, so it is an unusual enough beer to feel special. I liked it; a bit sweet to my taste, but I could have a couple some other day. We also ordered something to eat I can’t remember now, but it was good

This past Saturday our sketching group “Garabateando.com” went to Piñones, right in between Carolina and Loíza. Yesterday our sketching group “garabateando.com” moved to La Placita de Santurce. La Placita creates an interesting dynamic that has become one of the top meeting and entertainment spots in the metro area. Here is the refurbished building of La Plaza del Mercado, an early 20th century marketplace, and its small square or “placita”. A virtual paintout to kill time

A street in New Zealand... Although it is not the same as sketching on location I find amusing the idea of the virtual paintouts. I am trying a new set of Yarka watercolors, so the virtual location was better than nothing. I first washed in w/c and then sketched over it with the bleeding Papermate flair. Then retouched a bit with the waterbrush. I really like the results I get doing the line drawing after the color; I’ll be trying that next time out. #sketching #waterbrus

A twist to virtual paintouts

A good thing about virtual paintouts is that you can go “exploring” other countries without having to do it physically. However, sometimes I want to sketch interesting places or buildings and not necessarily streets, which is, well… Google’s Street View forte. Still sketching tight

Friday night I went to a very interesting presentation, called Pecha Kucha. It is a style originated in Japan designed for oral presentations to be fast and concise… Designers like to talk too much, so the presentation format is that you show 20 slides and can only speak 20 seconds on each. My first sketch at a beach

I’d gone several times to the place since I met my wife 17 years ago, but today it was the first time I walked down the street to where the beach is. It is really close, like 200 ft away from the restaurant, but I never cared to find out what was at the end of the street. It was actually a nicer scene than I thought.
